Pinarello Dogma F12 Disk - perfect for both climbing and long rides
Perhaps two or three years ago you never would have considered buying a road bike with disc brakes, these days the choice is a much more difficult one to make. The overall low weight of disc brake bikes and improved braking ability means that a bike like the Pinarello Dogma F12 Disk is every bit as racy and efficient as your old lightweight climber but with the added advantage of all-weather stopping practicality.
Even though Pinarello is releasing the Dogma F12 and the Dogma F12 Disk at the same time, don’t think that they are basically identical bikes. Pinarello wants you to love them equally and wants both to share the same amazing ride qualities, but getting to that end point required different decisions for each bike. That’s because the F12 Disk is a bike designed from top down for disc brakes. It’s not a rim brake frame adapted as an afterthought. So they reworked the layup of their Carbon Torayca T1100 1K Dream Carbon with Nanoalloy Technology: making certain that those points that withstand the greatest forces through braking have been thoroughly reinforced. But the frame itself has reduced its weight compared to the F10 Disk, tipping the scales at a very light 840 grams unpainted. That’s because Pinarello has refined the layering and neatened up the internals of the tubing in order to save weight and be even more efficient with the materials they use.
The fork also received quite a bit of attention. It has been redesigned to handle the braking forces even better, offering apparently a 40% improvement compared to the F10 Disk, which seems almost impossible since fork shudder was never an issue with that bike. You’ll also notice that the tube shapes and profiles are different from previous members of the F series. They have done that largely in a bid to make the frame more aero. Their success is evident in the claim that they have managed to reduce drag by 7.3%, which translates into a saving of 8 watts at 40kmh, as compared to the F10. They have also increased the stiffness by 10%. And if that is something that you may not entirely feel like you can take full advantage of, then feel secure in the fact that you will be able to appreciate how comfortable the F12 Disk is.
Additional design improvements come in the form of the internal cable routing that the new and improved Most cockpit. In fact, Pinarello designers took some very special care when developing the handlebar and headset interface in order to clean up that very important area in terms of aerodynamics. Integrating the cables and routing them through the bars and headset down to the brakes and gears improves not only the aerodynamics, but the functionality of the cable and the number of brake and gear combinations. And this new Most Ultra Talon sheds a lot of weight while increasing stiffness and enhancing aerodynamics. The other noteworthy change for the F12 Disk compared to the F10 is that now the frame has been designed to accommodate 28mm tires – and according to Pinarello can technically take even wider tires, though that would compromise the ISO 4210 standard. Of all the improvements, from the energy saving aerodynamics to the serious lateral stiffness, this wider tire capability might be the update that you will notice and appreciate most.
Various sizes of the Pinarello Dogma F12 Disk bike frame
The Pinarello Dogma F12 Disk is available in 13 sizes from 42cm to 62cm. They have also invested in their Most cockpit development to the point of producing 16 bar sizes, so you won’t have to compromise on the stem length and bar width when you go with one of their Ultra cockpits. The sky is really the limit when you start building up the F12 Disk as your next dream bike.
