Description
If you are watching a lot of men’s professional races in the past year or two, you’ll have noticed that all of a sudden the Lotto Jumbo or Jumbo Visma (or whatever they may be called from year to year) Team have been vacuuming up big wins, most often riding the Celeste colored Bianchi Oltre XR4, inconceivably paired with their bright yellow team kit. Undoubtedly, the magic balance of rigidity, aerodynamics, low weight, and comfort that the Oltre XR4 offers has made a big contribution to their wins in the Giro, Tour and just about every other big race on the calendar.
But do pro wins translate into a great bike for the average customer? Well, not always, but in the case of the Bianchi Oltre XR4, it would not be hard to imagine this being the type of bike that will help you decrease climbs times and increase your descending confidence. That’s because they have succeeded in making it lightweight, comfortable, and aero all at the same time. The high quality carbon has also received Bianchi’s Countervail treatment which means that the carbon material has a unique fiber architecture and is combined with a viscoelastic resin. This viscoelastic resin helps absorb road vibrations which will not only reduce fatigue, but improve the road feel and handling of the bike. Muscle fatigue will be reduced since you are not getting micro vibrations up the tubes. It will also make getting into that aero position encouraged by the pro geometry much more practical since the comfort levels will be much greater than harsher aero options from other brands.
Lightweight, Comfortable, and Aero Design of the Oltre XR4 frameset
The engineers at Bianchi manage to square that aero/comfort/weight circle by designing the frame and tube shapes using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This way they can refine and optimize every aspect of the frame, from the hourglass head tube to the shape of the beefy downtube as well as the aero cockpit. But then the execution of their designs comes when they start shaping and layering the carbon. They use EPS (expanded polystyrene) formed mandrels in the pressure molding to control the dimension of tubing particularly to get that smooth internal surface for increased strength and reduced weight. And for those important high stress areas like the head tube and bottom bracket, they use a Silicon mandrel to help apply pressure inside the mold, increasing the strength of those areas while reducing excess material.
Size Options and Stock Color Variations of the Bianchi Oltre XR4
Such attention to detail ensures the tubes have the perfect aero shape, which reduces drag by 15 to 20 watts compared to their XR2. The specially designed aero cockpit with completely internal cable routing also contributes a lot to the overall aero sleekness of the Oltre XR4. The dedicated aerodynamic seatpost with an integrated clamping system does its bit as well. Naturally the internal cable routing can accommodate mechanical and electric groupsets. And the Press Fit 86.5 bottom bracket ensures a wide selection of cranks can be used. It is available in seven sizes and two stock color options, though you can also personalize your color combos with Bianchi’s Tavolozza tailor made program.
Wind tunnel developed and pro tested, the Bianchi Oltre XR4 is a bike that has been developed for everything from winning the Tour de France to crushing your friends on your Saturday group rides.
